This photograph captures the expansive landscape of the Kibi region from Kinojo, an ancient mountain fortress located on Mt. Kinojo in Soja, Okayama, Japan. Kinojo is believed to have been constructed in the late 7th century. It is thought to have been part of a network of mountain fortifications built in western Japan following Japan's defeat at the Battle of Baekgang in 663, amid fears of an invasion by the Tang-Silla alliance. Kinojo is also connected to the legend of Ura, a powerful ogre said to have lived at the fortress and been defeated by Kibitsuhiko-no-Mikoto. This ancient legend is regarded as one of the origins of the famous Japanese Momotaro, or "Peach Boy," story.
