I am an artist who works with Sumi ink. It is said to have originated in China around 1500 BCE, when soot from bonfires was mixed with other materials. Later, during the Qin and Han dynasties, the prototype of solid ink was established by kneading soot with animal glue (nikawa) and molding it into solid ink sticks.
