"Someday, you'll long for a day just like this one." The day you'll want to return to may be an ordinary day, just like today. A child holds out a leaf they picked up — "Look at this." A father crouches down to receive that small discovery. Nearby, another child leans in, at ease, trusting. As a father raising two children, I poured into this piece the moments I never want to let slip away. When work and household tasks pile up, it's easy to put off a child's "Watch me" or "Do it with me." Some days, I catch myself thinking: they'll call out again tomorrow. Those little hands will always reach for me. But children grow, little by little. The weight of a child in your arms, the treasures they show you, the closeness between parent and child — all of it changes. The children we'll one day ache to see again when we look back at old photographs — we are living with them right now. In the painting, not far away, "Death" is sweeping fallen leaves. The leaf a child picks up. The leaves Death gathers into a pile. The very same leaf, in someone's hands, becomes an irreplaceable treasure. Our lives, and this season while our children are still small — both have an end. I painted that truth inside the same scene as the warmth between a parent and child. Over a white ground, I layered lines of yellow, green, blue, and red. White is left in the faces and hands, and the moment of connection is rendered in vivid color. In the middle of a busy day, if this painting catches your eye — maybe you'll crouch down beside your child and ask, "What did you find?" Maybe you'll stay a little longer and listen to what they have to say. I hope this work finds its way into small moments like those. I want to hold on to the time of seeing the world from the same height as my children. This is a piece made to hang in the midst of everyday life, and to carry that wish within it.
