A golden koi climbs the waterfall. Straining against the rushing current, it drives straight upward — and in the gilded clouds above, a rising dragon waits. An ancient Chinese legend tells that any koi which successfully scales the Dragon Gate (Longmen), the fierce rapids of the Yellow River, will be transformed into a dragon. From this story comes the Japanese expression tōryūmon (登竜門) — "passing through the Dragon Gate" — used to describe the defining trials that open the door to success and achievement. The carp streamers (koinobori) flown during the Boys' Festival (Tango no Sekku) share the same spirit, wishing children a life of growth and accomplishment.
