Long ago, a kind fisherman named Urashima Taro lived by the sea. One day he rescued a turtle being bullied by children on the beach. Days later, the turtle returned to thank him, carrying him on its back to the undersea Dragon Palace. There, the beautiful Princess Otohime welcomed him with feasts and dances, and Taro stayed for what felt like days of wonder. Eventually he missed home and asked to leave. Otohime gave him a mysterious box, warning him never to open it. Back on shore, everything had changed — hundreds of years had actually passed. Bewildered, Taro forgot her warning and opened the box. White smoke poured out, and he instantly became a white-haired old man. The story is often read as a lesson about keeping promises and the irreversible passage of time.
