Yamao Takeshi Born in Nara Prefecture in 1984. I am active primarily through art fairs and exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. Working with vivid, pop-inspired color palettes and my own distinctive character imagery, I continue to create work centered on the themes of unsettling feelings that linger in the heart, quiet tenderness, and the potential of imagination. My signature motifs — "Kuroko-chan" and the "misshapen children" — are depicted as guide-like figures existing on the border between reality and imagination. Artist Statement In my work, strange and misshapen beings appear — figures like Kuroko-chan, oni, and hannya. They are not monsters. Emotions that could never be put into words. Wishes that never reached anyone. Memories that should have been forgotten, yet refused to disappear. They are the invisible landscapes within people — inner worlds that have taken on another form and stepped into the light. In my recent works, a "black void" or "cave-like darkness" appears again and again. This is not meant to represent fear or despair. Rather, it is a place that holds emotions and memories without names yet, a source from which imagination flows. At the core of my practice lies the concept of "C·N·V (Create New Value)." We can never fully understand another person's life. But we can imagine it. When someone encounters my work and touches an unnamed feeling within themselves — or catches a glimpse of another person's invisible pain or kindness — something new is born: a new value, a new perspective. That small chain of imagination is where my creativity begins.
