Born in Tokyo. I graduated from the Department of Biology, College of Liberal Arts, International Christian University. Someone told me, "The materials are cheap, so you should go with this," and I ended up raising cockroaches for my thesis. Disillusioned by the gap between ideals and reality in biology, I moved to the United States and began studying illustration. I graduated from the Illustration program at ArtCenter College of Design. My work includes the UK Royal Mail Christmas stamps — reportedly printed in 200 million copies — illustrations for a worldwide Starbucks holiday campaign, and editorial pieces for The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and The Washington Post, among others. In 2013, I was commissioned by Golf Digest (US) to travel to Augusta, where I spent a week reporting on location before returning home to create the illustrations. In 2018, I produced official FIFA animation for social media promotions, screened on big screens at venues throughout the FIFA World Cup Russia. My other work spans magazine spot illustrations, book cover art — including the Hanzawa Naoki series and the Shitamachi Rocket series by Jun Ikeido — picture books, and more. My manga work includes Chikyuuzin. I have been selected for the Bratislava International Illustration Biennale and the Bologna Children's Book Fair Original Art Exhibition. I am a recipient of the Kodansha Publishing Culture Award (Illustration category), and have earned Gold and Silver Medals from the Society of Illustrators. I am a member of the Tokyo Illustrators Society, an instructor at Illustration Aoyamajuku, and the founder of Pensti. There are a few principles I hold dear when it comes to selling my work. The first is that I do not offer limited editions. Unlike traditional printmaking — where the plate wears down and is ultimately destroyed to produce a fixed number of prints — digital data can be output at the same quality any number of times. For this reason, I do not manufacture artificial scarcity to drive up prices; everything I sell is offered as an open edition. The second is honest pricing. The price of each work is simply the "cost of printing with high-quality pigment inks on specialty paper" plus "a modest fee for the work of creating the digital file." Even as the size goes up, I charge little more than the difference in printing cost. I want to deliver the beauty of the digital medium in its most natural form, without excessive embellishment or manufactured added value. If the print quietly finds a place in the everyday life of someone who stumbled upon this page and felt drawn to the work, I couldn't be happier.
High-quality giclée printing using 12-color pigment inks and 0.35mm fine art paper. Faithfully reproduces the texture and brushstrokes of the original work, with lightfastness of approximately 200 years.
