Nobuko Oyabu is a photographic artist and researcher based in Japan whose work explores how photography can give voice to experiences that are often difficult to articulate. She studied Photography and Photojournalism at Columbia College Chicago and earned a Master's degree from Kyoto University of the Arts. From 2002 to 2010, she traveled throughout the United States and Japan presenting STAND—Faces of Rape & Sexual Abuse Survivors, a long-term photographic project documenting the experiences and resilience of survivors. In 2003, she brought the project to the Hawaiian Islands through traveling exhibitions and lectures, including a presentation at a women's correctional facility in Hawaiʻi. These encounters deeply informed her continuing practice. Her subsequent projects include STAND Still—Visual Voices of Sexual Violence Survivors and the Yokohama International Youth Photo Project. She is currently a research student in Forensic Medicine at Yamaguchi University, investigating photography as a trauma-informed, empowering, and survivor-centered practice.
