Standing on Daisan-zaka slope in Hakodate — a city steeped in exotic, East-meets-West atmosphere — this venerable church was first built during the Meiji era. Destroyed twice by fire, it was rebuilt in 1921 as a Gothic-style church crowned by a 33-metre spire. This piece began as a sketch I made while living in Hakodate. It is a work close to my heart, having been nominated as an associate member of the Hokkaido Fine Arts Exhibition.
