PLUME 04 — Presence layers a pale, translucent flamingo against the organic forms of the background — allowing the figure to appear while never fully committing to a contour. Thin veils of pink, cream, and beige build upon one another until the body seems to dissolve into the surrounding air. Compared to earlier works in the series, the flamingo is relatively discernible — yet even here, the true subject is not the form itself, but the quiet sense of something hovering there. A work painted at the threshold between being seen and disappearing. SERIES — PLUME PLUME does not depict the flamingo as it is. Instead, the bird is unraveled into feathers, traces, afterimages, and translucent fields of color. Soft blush, warm ivory, greige, and restrained touches of gold overlap in transparent organic forms, while edges fade into watercolor haze. In some works the bird is clearly present; in others, only a curve of the neck, a feather, or a pair of legs faintly remains. The true subject is the open space left around what is drawn — the negative space (ma) through which light and air pass. Each piece embraces ambiguity and quiet resonance, inviting the viewer to sense the presence of the flamingo only after they have already stepped into the stillness of the image. ABOUT RITSUKO NISHIMURA Ritsuko Nishimura creates abstract works centered on light, air, silence, and negative space. Rather than describing a subject in full detail, her work focuses on the moment in which form appears, softens, and begins to disappear. Pale color, translucent layers, watercolor blooms, and restrained texture leave room for the viewer's own memory and perception to enter the image. Her approach is not only about making marks, but also about knowing when to stop — before the quiet has been filled.
