I make pictures drawn from the aesthetics of ukiyo-e and shin-hanga. Flat fields of color, bold outlines, open space. I'm trying to recapture the quiet that old woodblock prints once held — using today's paper and ink. Three colors at most: the ground, the black of the subject, and the color of the line. I add nothing beyond that. I believe that making a composition work with so few colors is precisely what lets a piece hold your gaze for a long time. My first three works feature a black cat and seasonal flowers — chrysanthemum for autumn, peony for early summer, cherry blossom for spring. I use AI image generation in my process, directing the composition, color, and quality of line point by point, and reworking each piece until it feels right. Gennekodo
