One piece from a series of floral motifs, rendered in the style of ukiyo-e and shin-hanga (the early 20th-century "new print" movement that refined traditional Japanese woodblock techniques). A chrysanthemum, its slender petals radiating outward in layer upon layer. Lines gather to form a flower, then part to become open space. That is all this image is. Neither the flower nor the leaves are filled in entirely — just two tones: the ground color and pale cream lines. Two different times seem to flow through it at once. The palette is deliberately low in saturation, in the spirit of wabi-sabi (the Japanese aesthetic of quiet imperfection and transience). It sits naturally with Wa-modern, Japandi, or Scandinavian interiors. Even in a contemporary home without a tokonoma (traditional display alcove), it brings a gentle sense of order to a single wall.
