Inspired by the "mountain wisteria" seen at the foot of Tsubakuro-dake in the Northern Alps, and the "summit of Tsubakuro-dake" as viewed from the North Tsubakuro direction, I painted a pair of ''soaring ptarmigan (raichō)'' — the legendary alpine birds of the Japanese mountains. At the same time, by layering those same forms together, the composition also takes shape as ''the head of an enormous dragon.'' The landscape of granite, white sand, and dwarf pine (haimatsu) is one I deeply love — and yet it also carries a strange, aching familiarity, like somewhere I have always known. A memory from a past life? I cannot say for certain, but I took the scenery from my recurring dreams and my own imagination and placed them side by side, left and right, across the canvas.
