This work was inspired by Mount Gongen in the Yatsugatake range, which I climbed while snow still lingered on the peaks. The imagery I envisioned: · Light and darkness · Red and white · Masculine and feminine And one of the three Imperial Treasures of Japan — "Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi" (the Grass-Cutting Sword) Within the composition: Mount Gongen is rendered as a "Dragon" On the left slope of Gongen, a "Tortoise" In the sea of clouds to the right, a "Phoenix" And layered across the entire canvas, the "Kirin" (a sacred chimeric beast of East Asian mythology) — together expressing the four divine creatures, the Shijin. The title "Enku" (炎駒, Flame Steed) takes its name from the ''red Kirin''. Stretching from the distant landscape (Mount Fuji) across the sea of clouds to the left, I have painted "Yamato Takeru wielding the ''Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi''" The single line running from the left side of the canvas to the right is an arrow in flight. It is layered with an image drawn from the ancient Indian scripture, the Bhagavad Gita — "Arjuna loosing the celestial bow ''Gandiva'' in the heat of battle." The "Rainbow Dragon" rising above the sea of clouds on the left is an homage woven from two threads of meaning: the Tibetan ''Jalü Phowa Chenpo'' (''ja' lus 'pho ba chen po'') — the phenomenon said to be the highest liberation attainable on Earth, in which the body dissolves into the light of the five elements and returns to the heavens — and the ''Legend of Yamato Takeru's White Bird'', the ancient Japanese myth in which the ''bird'' is said to be a symbol of the departing soul.
