"Dance of the Shadow" A shadow dances at her feet and mist dissolves its edges Through the spaces between the wind fragments of memory rise and swirl Light fades in silence and time holds its breath At the outermost edge of being the soul goes on dancing ◈ Artist's Note When I first approached this work, Dance of the Shadow, what seized me was a feeling I can only call "the vitality of absence." It wasn't simply that a woman's figure was present — rather, her very existence caused the entire surrounding space to tremble, and I wanted to fill that trembling with invisible forces: memory, light, the things that cannot be seen. In composing the image, I pushed the contrast between the harsh light pouring through the blue window and the deep surrounding shadow as far as it could go. I deliberately kept the silhouette of the woman at the center from becoming too sharply defined, layering in fine noise and glitch-like grain so that she could be at once solid and fleeting. To suggest the movement of her skirt, I introduced intentional blur where the tonal shifts follow the light, creating the sensation that the air itself is in motion. The poem grew out of the image of "mist dissolving edges." I felt that this process of dissolution was exactly the boundary between her presence and the memories she carries. In the lines about fragments rising "through the spaces between the wind," I consciously arranged bluish clusters of letterforms along the left side of the frame — stand-ins for memory — so that they drift through the air like physical dust. The lines "Light fades in silence / and time holds its breath" carry a particular weight for me. I wanted to render visually the gradual darkening of the brightest areas. Even if her dance goes on forever, for the viewer there is always a moment that ends. To lock in that sense of "suspended time," I took care not to over-blur the sharp blue-edged light in the upper right of the frame, preserving crisp detail there. In the final passes, I unified the whole in a deep cyan-blue palette, keeping a faint residue of digital grain throughout, then made subtle adjustments to bring the "wavering" between darkness and light — that liminal flicker — into the sharpest possible relief.
