"Amid the Sunset" Amid a sunset dissolving into orange, you stand in quiet stillness. With footsteps no one can see, you walk along the wall. The room where you once laughed is now dark, silent, and cold. Yet you remain, unchanged, guarding that place still. If your feelings still cannot reach me, please — don't go just yet. Trusting in the light of your soul, I call out your name. ◈ Artist's Note Within a room steeped in the dense, amber glow of sunset, the spirit of a lone woman stands in quiet repose. A place that must once have held someone's laughter and the warmth of everyday life is now ruled by a silence and chill, as though time itself has stopped. To capture that contrast in atmosphere, I bathed the entire canvas in the dying light of dusk. Through the tension between the vivid orange hues and the space sinking into shadow, I sought to freeze the fleeting moment where the real world and the beyond bleed softly into one another. She moves with footsteps that go unnoticed — as if becoming part of the wall itself — pressing forward as though to protect the memories of another time. Her form carries a sense of substance, yet there is a fragility to it, as though she might dissolve into the noise and blur of the image at any moment. By layering digital processing, I tried to express the sensation of a threshold (境界, sakái) — the feeling of her presence lingering in this world while, at the same time, slowly drifting somewhere far away. My gaze as I look upon her is filled with longing that cannot reach its destination, and with a desperate kind of prayer. Even if calling her name brings back only silence, I made this work with the wish to believe in the light of a soul that is still there. Rather than simply rendering a beautiful scene, I place great importance on leaving negative space (余白, yohaku) — a quiet opening through which the loneliness and the faint echo of lost memories can gently brush against the viewer's heart.
