The Eye That Remains — Shinjuku 残された眼 ― 新宿の目 My last month in Tokyo, after nearly twenty years working in the city. Before leaving, I wanted to see the artwork that had always stayed in the back of my mind — the *Shinjuku Eye* — one more time. But as I walked through Shinjuku's west exit, I couldn't find it anywhere. I finally ducked into a police box and asked, "Excuse me, where is the Shinjuku Eye?" And there it was — right in front of the police box, where it had been all along. I stood there for a while, face to face with it. That enormous pupil. The rippling glass. Light, scattered in every direction. And something quietly looking back at me — a presence that was hard to explain. The Shinjuku Subaru Building, which once housed the work, has since been demolished and erased from the cityscape. Yet the *Shinjuku Eye* remains, still watching over the west exit. This photograph is not simply a document of urban art. It is my own memory of Tokyo — the moment I stood at the end of nearly twenty years in this city and met that gaze one last time. One eye that endures, even as the city around it disappears. The Eye That Remains — Shinjuku. I rendered this piece in both monochrome and color, each giving a different face to the eye that stayed behind.
