After returning to Japan, he ran a record shop in Kudanshita before eventually opening this Jazz Cafe here in Jinbocho. Inside: a Garrard turntable, a vacuum-tube amplifier, and the legendary JBL Lancer 99 waiting to catch every note. When the needle meets an old record, soft, richly textured jazz begins to fill the room — unhurried, inevitable. Live jazz sessions are held here regularly, drawing artists through the door, but the particular kind of time that passes in this place goes beyond simply listening to music. A wooden counter. Warm, low light. Bottles and jazz-related curios arranged just so. Outside, the city moves in its restless rush. But on this side of the counter, time eases off the accelerator — just a little.
