The Eye That Remains — Shinjuku 残された眼 ― 新宿の目 My last month in Tokyo, after nearly twenty years working in the city. Before leaving, I decided I wanted to see *Shinjuku no Me* — "The Eye of Shinjuku," an artwork that had always stayed in the back of my mind — one final time. But as I walked through Shinjuku's west exit, I couldn't find it anywhere. I finally ducked into a police box and asked, "Excuse me, where is the Shinjuku Eye?" And there it was — right in front of the police box, the whole time. I stood there for a while, face to face with it. An enormous pupil. Rippling glass. Countless points of light. And a strange, quiet presence — as if it were looking back at me. The Subaru Building that once surrounded it has since been demolished, erased from the streetscape. Yet the Shinjuku Eye remains, still watching over the west exit. This photograph is not simply a document of urban art. It is my own memory of Tokyo — captured in the moment I stood at the end of nearly twenty years, and looked into this eye one last time. One eye that endures, as the city's landmarks fade and disappear around it. The Eye That Remains — Shinjuku. I made this work in both monochrome and color, each version revealing a different face of that remaining gaze.
