Solar Eye — After the Storm Karasuma Oike, Kyoto. Tucked into a corner of the city, as though stranded in the middle of the urban sprawl, stands an enormous metal sun. Nearly twelve meters across, it is unmistakably a sun — and yet, something about it reads as a giant *eye*. It was the tail end of summer, the heat still lingering in name only. A thunderstorm had swept through just before dusk, and in the quiet it left behind on the wet streets, I found myself standing before this massive monument. Looking at it, I was suddenly reminded of *Eye of Shinjuku* — the giant eye I once encountered in a building in Shinjuku, Tokyo. A colossal eye, appearing without warning in the middle of a city. By rendering it in monochrome, I drew out the texture of the metal, the interplay of light and shadow — until it no longer looked like architectural ornamentation at all, but like some enormous object that had drifted in from another era. The end of summer, after the storm had passed. The great sun left behind on a Kyoto street corner gazes back at me in silence. A season slipping away. The memory of a city.
