"The Contour of Silence" A place where snow falls heavy and deep A shadow stands, utterly alone The world is swathed in stillness Solitude takes form At the boundary of light and dark Existence itself is called into question ◈ Artist's Note This piece began with a simple composition: a silhouette in the snow. Winter landscapes have always carried a particular quietness for me, but this time I wanted to pose a question within that stillness — a question about existence itself. Rather than rendering a figure with clarity, I felt that showing someone merely standing there, like a shadow, would leave a far stronger impression. The palette is entirely monochrome. The contrast of white and black not only underscores the relationship between snow and shadow, but also serves to blur the boundary between reality and illusion. The background is softly defocused — hinting at distant trees and terrain while drawing the eye inward toward the lone figure at the center. For the light, I chose not a frontal brightness but a gentle, ambient chiaroscuro that filters in from all sides. This shifts the figure from a state of "looking" to one of simply "being." The snow particles settled on the ground were deliberately rendered as granular noise — an allusion to the movement of wind and air, a way of saying that even within silence, there is life. In Photoshop, I pushed the contrast to keep the figure's edges sharp, while simultaneously softening them so the figure might dissolve back into the background. By reducing the silhouette to pure form, I stripped away all identifying detail — name, age, gender — leaving only the presence of "someone." A line I kept returning to while writing the poem was "solitude takes form," and this work is my attempt to give that idea a visual body. The snow-filled space appears infinite, yet only one figure stands within it.
