"Beyond the Shadow" Light pours in through the window The shadow stands still within the silence No name can be given to that form Only a faint heartbeat remains Filling the room As if searching for someone Yet meeting no one Facing only oneself In this moment Between darkness and light The silence resounds ◈ Artist's Note I began this work wanting to give shape to a feeling that lives on the threshold — a feeling I associated with the phrase "beyond the shadow." The central tension of the piece is the contrast between the harsh light falling into the room and the deep shadows it casts. What I was particularly drawn to was the sense of light coming through the window not merely as illumination, but as something that encroaches on the space — or even exposes what lies within it. Against that light, I wanted to portray a figure standing quietly, yet with an undeniable presence. I deliberately left the silhouette of the figure undefined. With no visible face and no clear texture to the clothing, any sense of individual identity is erased — creating a kind of ma (negative space; room for the viewer's own projection) in which the viewer can layer onto the figure their own nameless inner something. In the pose and stance, I aimed to evoke a solitary will: the quality of gazing somewhere far away, or of sinking deep into one's own interior. During the creative process, I worked within a digital medium but intentionally layered noise over the image to pursue a texture that feels like memory slowly blurring. Rather than polished smoothness, I wanted a rough, granular quality — something that makes the boundary between light and dark seem to tremble, producing an atmosphere of quiet instability. By pushing the contrast while keeping the overall palette in a muted, pale grey, I hoped to express visually that sensation of a "faint heartbeat" resonating within the silence. Through this work, I wanted to draw attention not only to what the light illuminates, but to what hides in the depths of the shadow — the place where emotions that cannot be put into words reside. What lives there is not an encounter with someone else, but the stillness of a moment in which you have no choice but to face yourself.
